For many years at Shekinah3, we have worked with Blue Lotus flower and its beautiful aromatic oil. It has become a cherished ally in our ceremonies, meditation, dream work and moments of quiet contemplation.

As our botanical studies have deepened, we recently discovered something that surprised us. There appears to be a widespread misidentification within the herbal trade. Much of what is sold internationally as Blue Lotus or Nymphaea caerulea may, in fact, be Nymphaea nouchali or another closely related blue water lily, while carrying the name of the sacred Egyptian species.

This discovery hasn't lessened our appreciation for the plant we have been using. Rather, it has deepened our respect for the importance of botanical accuracy, historical lineage and the integrity of the plant kingdom.

The sacred Egyptian Nymphaea caerulea has long been revered for its ceremonial and contemplative qualities. It contains naturally occurring alkaloids, particularly nuciferine and aporphine, which are believed to contribute to its calming, meditative and dream-enhancing effects.

In our experience, working with authenticated Nymphaea caerulea offers a deeper, more immersive and contemplative relationship with the plant. We have found it gently supports expanded states of awareness, inner stillness and dream work in a way that feels noticeably different from the more commonly available blue water lilies. While modern scientific comparisons between these species remain limited, our own experience has inspired us to continue exploring the remarkable wisdom held within this sacred Egyptian plant.

This rare flower and the euphoric effect it has; whether smoking, drinking as a tea or taken as a spagyric, is simply beautiful and has to be experienced!

At Shekinah3, we believe the path of herbalism is one of lifelong learning. The plants continue to teach us, inviting us to approach them with humility, curiosity and reverence. We look forward to sharing more of what we discover as we continue honouring these ancient botanical allies.
